For nearly four decades, Dakota Community Centre (DCC) has been the beating heart of south Winnipeg. Since opening its doors in 1987, DCC has grown alongside a rapidly expanding community—now home to thousands of families who play, learn, connect, and thrive through sport, recreation, and community programming. Today, DCC stands as one of Winnipeg’s most active and inclusive community hubs.

Arena and Recreation Centre Expansion Project

DCC’s Arena and Recreation Centre Expansion Project is a bold, future-focused redevelopment designed to serve the next generation of families, athletes, and community members.

The vision includes:

A new, fully accessible 750-seat community arena
Expanded childcare and indoor play spaces for 50+ children
A modern fitness centre connected to the Dakota Fieldhouse
172 additional parking stalls and improved site circulation
A welcoming new community café to replace the existing 30-year-old canteen

Why This Project Is Needed

Today, DCC operates at — and beyond — capacity.

Over 5,100 hours of ice are booked annually
95% of prime-time ice is booked year-round
Arenas are fully booked daily from 6 a.m. to midnight
120+ children remain on waitlists for introductory skating programs

At the same time, Winnipeg has not built a new public arena in more than a decade, and the city faces a significant shortage of modern ice facilities. Without new infrastructure, families are left with fewer opportunities to play, train, and connect close to home.
