Postal Strike Problems? Have No Fear—DCC’s Volunteer Community is Here Jennifer Golletz News & Updates 8 October 2025 Lillian and Tom Yakielashek, regular volunteers at DCC since 2022, recently stepped up to help deliver nearly 300 copies of our community magazine. When Canada Post delays threatened to hold up delivery of our much-loved Community News Magazine, we didn’t let it stop us. In true Dakota Community Centre (DCC) spirit, we called on our volunteers, staff, and leadership to step up—and they delivered. Literally.Over the past week, a dedicated team of volunteers, staff, our CEO, Board Chair and Vice Chair hit the streets in south St. Vital, hand-delivering nearly 8,000 copies of our magazine.“The postal strike reminded us of something bigger: how strong, responsive, and caring our community really is. When challenges arise, DCC doesn’t slow down, we rise up. Together,” says Michele Augert, President and CEO of DCC.This incredible grassroots effort ensured that no household missed out on the latest community updates, events, and stories, including a special offer for our members to attend DCC Night with the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 26, when our very own Jonathan Toews takes the ice.A Heartfelt THANK YOUOn behalf of all of us at DCC, thank you to everyone who jumped in to help when it mattered most.“Watching our volunteers, staff, and leadership come together so quickly and with such purpose is exactly why DCC continues to thrive,” says Cory Shangreaux, DCC’s Board Chair. “We’re not just responding to challenges, we’re building a stronger, more connected community every day. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who stepped up. Thank you for your time and your commitment to DCC.”You may have already seen our team out and about in the community, walking through neighbourhoods with a big stack of magazines. If you spot one of them still making their rounds, be sure to give them a wave or a thank you—they’ve certainly earned it.“When the usual systems stall, DCC’s people-powered spirit kicks into high gear. I couldn’t be prouder of our team. I’m truly grateful to everyone who showed up when we needed it. Thank you for being part of what makes this community so strong,” adds Augert.A special thank you to the following volunteers: Matt Awang; Lillian and Tom Yakielashek; Kelly Tone; Greg Fisher; Helen Tack; Fred Nicholson; Fran Friesen; Dale Napper; Michele Keizer; Carol Hodgert; Gilles Augert; Kent Ashton; Greg Mortimer; Audrey Saxton; Cory Shangreaux; Zuwera Assibey; Beatrice and Daryl Patton; Joseph Langan; and Roberta Dick.Want to get involved next time?
