The federal government is committing $7.5 million toward the first phase of a significant expansion of the Dakota Community Centre, a project expected to significantly enhance recreation, sport and community services in southern Winnipeg.

The funding was announced Monday by Winnipeg South MP Terry Duguid and will support the construction of a new, fully accessible arena along with expanded recreational facilities. Once completed, the project will add new dressing rooms, an additional rink, a modern fitness area and an upgraded ice plant designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce long-term operating costs.

Plans also call for expanded child-care space and the addition of multipurpose rooms, allowing the centre to host a broader range of programs, community gatherings and events.

The investment is being made through the federal government’s Build Communities Strong Fund, unveiled in the 2025 federal budget as part of a long-term strategy to renew and expand local infrastructure across Canada.

Duguid said the funding will help ensure the Dakota Community Centre continues to serve as a vital gathering place for residents while meeting modern accessibility and sustainability standards.
