To come back and wear Jets blue in the same community where I took my first strides on the ice, it’s incredibly special,” says Toews.Born and raised in south St. Vital, Toews first laced up his skates as a Dakota Lazer at DCC. Years of hard work and determination led to his selection as the third overall pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2006 NHL Draft. As captain, Toews guided the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups championships in 2010, 2013, and 2015.Toews continued to shine on the international stage, earning Olympic gold medals with Team Canada in both 2010 and 2014. Following a brief hiatus from the NHL, he signed with the Winnipeg Jets in early 2025 to continue his remarkable career, this time on home ice. “I’ve been fortunate to achieve a lot in my career and it has been really meaningful to be able to celebrate those moments with this community. Winnipeg has been a big part of my journey.”Following his first Stanley Cup and gold medal win in 2010, Toews relationship with DCC took on a permanent legacy when the facility was renamed the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex. In 2016, Toews further demonstrated his commitment to DCC by stepping up as Honorary Chair of the Dakota Futures Campaign, launching the construction of a 60,000-square-foot Fieldhouse with a landmark $1 million gift.“Giving back is my way of saying thank you—and hopefully helping the next kid believe in themselves the same way,” he says, crediting his parents, Bryan and Andrée, for their ongoing guidance and support.“Nothing I’ve achieved would have been possible without my parents. They taught me about hard work, humility, and giving back.”Toews influence on young players in the community goes far beyond the banners and trophies—it’s woven into the daily rhythm of kids lacing up skates at the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex. Many young athletes see in Toews someone who once stood exactly where they stand now, on local ice, full of big dreams. His return to Winnipeg is a powerful reminder to local youth that greatness can come from right here in their own backyard. As he reflected on what he hopes to pass on to the next generation, Toews shares:“Dream big, but remember: it’s the small days—the early morning skate, the extra practice, the way you carry yourself off the ice—that define you. Work hard. Be kind. And never forget where you started.”As he steps back onto the ice in the city where it all began, the community stands behind him with pride, gratitude, and open arms. His journey has inspired generations, and now, his return brings that inspiration full circle.Welcome home, Jonathan!
