Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson's Disease is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by reduced dopamine production.  It results in a loss of bodily control, extending far beyond a mere shaky hand.  It is a life-altering condition where individuals face the challenge of their bodies, progressively disobeying commands.  This creates a confinement of slowness, rigidity, clouded minds, muted voices and both physical and mental pain.  More than 8 million people in the world have Parkinson’s.

Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death and hospitalization in Manitoba, highlighting the importance of ongoing research. CVD encompasses a range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, often leading to heart attacks and strokes. Risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obesity, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which your body either cannot produce insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it produces.  Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas.  Insulin’s role is to regulate the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood.  11 million Canadians are living with diabetes or prediabetes.

Osteoporosis

A condition characterized by weakened bones and increased risk of fractures, particularly the hip, wrist or spine.  It often progresses without symptoms until a bone breaks, which can be the first sign of this disease.  Factors contributing to osteoporosis include aging, hormonal changes, insufficient calcium and vitamin D intake and a sedentary lifestyle.
